Wheathampstead Wanderers Under 7s Triumph at the National Youth Football Tournament, The Hatters Cup

A group of 26 football mad Under 7s were very excited last weekend, when they took part in this year’s Hatter Cup, a nationwide youth football tournament, held at the ground of new league champions Luton Town Football Club.

The Wheathampstead Wanderers Under 7s, sponsored by leading regional law firm Pictons,   currently train and play in 5v5 festivals organised by the Mid Herts Rural Minors League or play similar friendly fixtures every Saturday, whatever the weather.  Their passion for football is undiminished during the worst of the winter as facilities are organised in Welwyn Garden City to make sure the youngsters can keep playing and training.

Three Wheathampstead Wanderers U7 teams were entered into the Hatters Cup, including one female player. All the players  received a participation medal.  Harpenden resident Sukh Saini, Managing Partner of Pictons says “We were also sponsors of the Hatters Cup this year. It’s a fantastic national tournament that has an incredibly high standard of football, with over 1000 young people aged from under 7-15 participating. It is an opportunity to discover the stars of tomorrow, as well as the youngsters having the time of their lives.

“My son Arjan played in the Wheathampstead Wanderers Under 7s for the first time this year and like all the parents who attended this amazing  tournament I was bursting with pride and cheered myself hoarse!”.

Ian Corbett, the Wheathampstead Wanders Under 7s team coach says “The enjoyment of the children comes first at Wheathampstead Wanderers FC and success is not measured simply by results. The U7s were invited to a mini tournament organised by Luton Town Football Club at Barnfield Academy, where they did themselves, the parents and the club proud.  A number of them were subsequently offered additional training from Luton Town FC coaches.

“The Hatters Cup weekend was a sensational experience for our Under 7s and  they were all so excited at the thought of playing at the  champions football ground. We were delighted to have a female player in the team and we definitely want more girls to come forward and play in this great sport. Our season officially ends on June 14th, the date of the club’s presentation day when all the kids will get a trophy to recognise their efforts.”
