U14 Sharks Through In County Cup Nail-Biter

posted Oct 5, 2015, 12:32 AM by Wheathampstead Wanderers

Another nail biting game for the Sharks today against an unknown quantity from the very competitive Watford friendly league. The boys were on a roll from their previous two games and had a big task ahead of them to keep up their good form . This they did , keeping up their 100 percent record of being in the lead at half time in every match so far.
The Sharks took an early lead after a great through ball to Callum saw him control the ball with his shoulder and calmly slot the ball home .This was followed  later in the half by a superbly struck long range effort from Max that left the keeper no chance of saving. This spurred  the Stripes into action as they fought hard to make amends for the first two goals. Shortly before the end of the half they got a goal back .
Half time 2-1
The second half was more difficult as the Stripes really got themselves back into the game and a change of goalkeeper for them ,nullified a number of good chances for the Sharks . We finally succumbed to an equaliser after a superbly struck shot found the back of our net .
The scored stayed at 2-2
to leave the tired teams looking at another 20 minutes of extra time. Freddie had made an incredible full stretch airborne save to tip the ball around the post to keep us in the game. I should say the oppo keeper was in just as fine form to keep us at bay.
full time 2-2
Extra time was another nail biting affair and  although the Sharks dominated most of the 20 minutes they couldn't get that winning goal and the inevitable penalty shoot out was before us. It was also touch and go whether we could get our willing penalty takers back on the pitch before the whistle blew.
We did practice penalties in training this week and if you'd watched you wouldn't have been comforted by the prospect of this shoot out !
Five volunteers stepped forward from the players still on the pitch and the goalkeepers prepared themselves for glory or defeat .
The first chance went to the Stripes and resulted in a calm save from Freddie . Max now stepped up and calmly slotted home. 1-0.
Another penalty from the stripes saw Freddie make a great save with his feet .Sean  stepped up and made no mistake with his .2-0
Stripes were really on the ropes now and their big defensive player stepped up and scored . Harry now stepped up and made no mistake to bring the score to 3-1.
Stripes stepped up again and scored another .This now left Ben H with the result of the game at his feet , another well taken penalty left the boys with an unassailable lead 4-2 !!
I'm sure everyone watching would agree that the Sharks deserved this win , There were great performances all over the field, including cameos like Tom's at left mid,He dominated this position in extra time and relieved a lot of pressure on the other boys as all the stripes play seemed to be down this wing. James ,Harry, david and sam all put in sterling defensive performances. Equally ,the midfield and strikers worked relentlessly in this game. Obviously our outstanding keeper Freddie got man of the match .I don't think I can overstate how well he did under pressure in the big goals today ,lets not forget he is playing a year above his age as well !
