Wheathampstead Ladies secure Division 3 title

posted Apr 25, 2018, 11:51 AM by Wheathampstead Wanderers   [ updated Apr 25, 2018, 12:00 PM ]

Following a set back last week, Wheathampstead began the day level on points with Bedford but trailing by three on goal difference. A fast start against Bedwell Rangers would be ideal, and three goals in the first ten minutes quickly erased the goal disadvantage. However, with half time approaching further good news was in short supply. One goal had been conceded, Wheathampstead's star striker (39 of the team's 45 league goals) had limped off injured and word that Bedford were ahead against Welwyn Pegasus.

A timely strike just before the break helped raise spirits as the team reorganised during the half time interval. In a second half display which epitomised the determination shown all season, five goals followed with just one more conceded. Wheathampstead Ladies had recorded their biggest win of the season, 9-2. And, with information coming through that Welwyn had fought back to beat Bedford 3-2, celebrations could start at the final whistle.
