Wheathampstead U11 Sharks Vs Welwyn Pegasus Royals

posted Sep 10, 2013, 1:33 AM by
The first round of the County cup saw us paired with Welwyn Royals and who play in the division
above us , so it was a good chance to judge ourselves against a Premier team. With Kai ill and Jamie
away we started with Alfie in goal , Cian Olli Matty and Ben in defence Charlie Jack and Calum in midfield
with Josh up front and Dan waiting eagerly to come on.
As the game kicked off it was evident that the Royals are a very good passing team with good technical
players who were easy on the eye. Our players however were having an "off day" . Whether it was too many
late nights or not enough junk food , who knows ? .We just could not pass the ball without giving it away and
we had to deal with a lot of Pegasus pressure which led to a goal from a good shot that Joe Hart let alone Alfie
would not have stopped and then another from a shot that had a wicked bounce and spin which crept into the
net. It was very frustrating standing on the touchline seeing our team not doing theirselves justice however
the introduction of Dan saw the momentum start to swing in our favour. Slowly some of our passes found the
feet of our players and we came into the game which resulted in some pressure and several corners for us.
However this didn't last as Calum limped off and other players had their heads down which was very disappointing.
  H-T  0-2
I do not know what was put in the boys orange juice at half time but the team that came out was a different
team that started the first half.. From the off they forced Pegasus back, our passing and counter attacking was
excellent and the Royals had no answer to the overload being created by Olli and Cian coming forward from
 full back.
From being the controlled passing team we were now forcing errors from Pegasus and we had many shots on
at goal. Unfortunately most went wide or over , where have we heard this before!?.  Also I am not entirely sure
of the reasons why a penalty was not awarded, as from where I stood, it looked like a clean catch  from the
Pegasus defender!!. . Eventually we pulled a goal back from Calum and we knew if we could equalize then the
game was ours for the taking. Unfortunately a rare break away and shot saw the ball nestle in the back of our net.
  Final score 1-3
However as poor as we were in the first half we were excellent in the 2cnd half and the boys did theirselves justice in the end. Just like yesterday a Jekyll and Hyde performance and if we could just be good in both halves then we
will have nothing to fear from anyone.
Good luck to Pegasus in the County Cup and like Bury Rangers another good set of parents.
Well done to the referee and to all the players for a good game of football.
